Portable Media Center: New TI and Microsoft Initiative

Texas Instruments announced the beginning of a collaboration with Microsoft on the creation of portable devices Portable Media Center – devices capable of playing audio, video, viewing digital photos. As you might guess, the hardware of these devices will be based on TI Digital Media processors, and the software will have the ability to interact with PCs running Windows XP Media Center Edition.

Digital Media processors are created using system-on-a-chip (SOC) technology, support QVGA resolution (320×240), Windows Media Video 9. The processors contain an ARM core and a digital signal processor (DSP), a hardware video encoder, a hardware video accelerator, and a USB host controller. Digital Media Processors have a programmable architecture, support by default Windows Media Audio (WMA), MP3, JPEG, and other formats that are easy to add support for, but apparently not necessary for Portable Media Center.

On our own, we note that in the niche of portable multimedia devices, the undisputed technological leader has so far been Archos, although recently Samsung, LG, Siemens and many others have announced their desire to enter this market. Microsoft’s entry into this market, in addition to its quite natural desire to conquer an emerging segment, is also associated with the desire to provide a full range of solutions for home networks running Windows XP Media Center Edition.
