Advanced Fuel Cell for Mobile Devices Uses Propane Power
Researchers at the California Institute of Technology have developed a miniature fuel cell that is about the size of a wristwatch battery and generates power by burning propane. Two of these cells reportedly have enough batteries to power an MP3 player. The new source is calculated to provide more energy than the best lithium battery available today.
The novelty owes its appearance to several important technological advances.
First, it uses an improved thermal energy extraction method. As you know, in a compact device, which is characterized by a large ratio of surface area to volume of the element, high temperature losses. If you add thermal insulation, the advantage of compactness disappears. Scientists managed to get around the contradiction by burning fuel in small portions, sufficient to generate heat and maintain the temperature of the cell.
Secondly, the fuel cell is made according to a single-chamber scheme. It has a single inlet for supplying a mixture of oxygen and fuel and a single outlet, which makes the cell very simple and compact.
Third achievement – catalysts developed at Northwestern University. With their help, it was possible to obtain a sufficiently high temperature of the fuel cell. In addition, thanks to the linear heat exchanger, the hot gases exiting the fuel cell transfer their energy to the incoming cold inlet gases.
The project is still experimental, but has already shown its potential. In terms of applications, fuel cells could find their place in power supplies for laptops, cameras, camcorders, handheld players – wherever lightweight, compact and power hungry batteries are needed. By the way, different types of hydrocarbon fuels can be used in a fuel cell. Propane was chosen because it liquefies easily and just as easily turns into a gaseous state.
