Music played for a short time: HP refuses iPod
Hewlett Packard Decides to Discontinue Selling Apple Computer’s iPod. Representatives of two companies announced this at the end of the week.
Players were still available on HP at the time of announcement. Final shutdown of the iPod is scheduled for late September, but after that HP will continue to install Apple iTunes software on its computers.
What was the reason for this decision? Why the super popular product turned out to be superfluous in the HP assortment?
Probably, the refusal to sell the player is part of the organizational changes underway at HP (recently, by the way, more detailed information on the details of the transformations became available). As you know, the companies announced a collaboration on the sale of iPods at the Consumer Electronics Show in 2021, when Carly Fiorina was still at the helm of the company. But this is, so to speak, a political component, and what about the economy? According to Apple, over the entire period, iPod sales through HP accounted for only about 5% of the total.
Interestingly, HP’s main competitor, Dell, also could not resist the temptation to enter the MP3 player market. True, Dell decided to go their own way and started developing the original Dell DJ model (in the bottom picture). So far, the venture has not been particularly successful – Apple continues to dominate the pocket music market with its iPod, iPod Mini and iPod Shuffle.
So HP is leaving the portable MP3 player market. At least for a while: Apple’s iPod agreement states that the company must refrain from selling competing products for a year. Will it help focus efforts on more promising areas? Will show the time. Some analysts believe it would make sense for HP to separate the PC and printing business from the rest of the company. Thus, they could focus on the corporate market for products and services, but the current leadership has not yet changed the strategic commitment to the consumer market.
