IBM unveils new “top-end” server powered by Intel processors
IBM has announced the release of the new flagship of the xSeries server family – the x460 model, in a maximum configuration designed for 32 Intel Xeon MP processors.
The novelty is built on the x3 chipset of its own design by IBM, which allows combining four-processor modules. Scalable architecture gives system buyers the ability to expand capacity as their needs grow by adding new blocks with multiple processors.
The server uses the Xeon MP processor (codename – Potomac), specially designed for multiprocessor servers. This is a 64-bit chip that can handle more than 4GB of memory. Servers designed for the Xeon MP will also be able to host its dual-core successor, slated for release in early 2021.
The first versions of the x460, with four or eight processors, will be available from June 17. Server with eight Xeon MP processors running at 3.33 GHz is $ 72,182. In a month, in July, customers will be able to purchase configurations with 32 processors.
IBM’s approach to the Intel processor-based server market changed in 1998 when the company began work on its own chipsets for multiprocessor platforms. The x460 server uses a third-generation Intel processor chipset.
