Sony is ready to cross Blu-ray with HD-DVD

As it became known at the end of last week, Sony, which was still concerned almost exclusively with the Blu-ray standard, allows the possibility of uniting with supporters of HD-DVD technology, which surprised the latter a lot, who believed that Sony was unlikely to change its position in the foreseeable future. more than that, the company, firstly, spent a lot of money for the whole past year on promoting its standard, and, secondly, it has sufficient resources in the form of subsidiary recording and media companies to release content on its media. According to company representatives, Sony took this step under pressure from consumers who complain about the presence of two incompatible technologies on the market.

Sources note that, on the one hand, Sony’s decision could have been influenced by repeated remarks by HD-DVD supporters, including NEC and Toshiba, about the cost of the new standard discs – at the level of conventional DVDs, plus automatic backward compatibility with DVDs and CDs – unnecessarily complications of optical heads.

On the other hand, it seems that Sony has simply decided not to step on the old rake again – suffice it to recall how the company’s sales suffered as a result of supporting only its own proprietary audio coding standard instead of shareware MP3. Then, of course, Sony corrected its mistake, but, as they say, the moment was missed.

Note, however, that the words of top managers of Sony – so far, in diplomatic language, only “statements of intent” and do not mean who the company’s engineers will rush to develop universal drives tomorrow. However, this is the second hint of cooperation for HD-DVD supporters, so now it is their turn to do something.
