Hackers gain control of a computer by spreading a worm through instant messaging systems
Panda Software’s antivirus lab reports the spread of the Oscarbot worm.F, capable of giving an attacker control over an infected computer and spreading through the popular (especially in the United States) instant messaging client AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). TruPrevent technology developed by Panda Software was able to block and destroy this worm without the need to first identify it.
This is a new version of the Oscarbot family of worms that has the functions of a ‘bot’, i.e.e. executes orders received from a remote user. After its installation on a computer, the code creates a copy of itself in the Windows system folder and edits certain registry keys to ensure that it runs every time the system is started.
This new version confirms the increasing interest of virus authors in new forms of communication, such as instant messaging systems. Other examples previously reported by Panda Software include the Bropia and Kelvir worms, each with multiple versions. In this case, there is a double motive, since with the ‘bot’ functionality, the distribution of Oscarbot.F can serve to create networks of ‘bots’ that can be used for various purposes (usually to send spam, carry out attacks against other computers, download other malware) and through which the creators of malicious code can make financial profit.
For more information on the described malicious code, see Panda Software’s Virus Encyclopedia.
