Apple Recalls G4 Laptop Batteries

Apple Computer and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) have recalled rechargeable batteries used in Apple iBook and PowerBook laptops. A related statement says that buyers should immediately stop using the batch of said batteries. Apple is organizing a free battery exchange through its website and phone service.

In the States alone, about 128 thousand batteries were sold, falling under the terms of replacement. They were produced by the North Korean company LG Chem Ltd. Unreliable components were assembled in Taiwan and China. The problem with batteries is that an internal short circuit can cause the battery to overheat and pose a risk of fire. Of the six Apple reports of overheating batteries, two are from US consumers.

Recoverable lithium batteries were used in the iBook G4 and PowerBook G4 with 12-inch displays and the PowerBook G4 with 15-inch display. Model numbers with recallable batteries include the lines A1061, A1078, and A1079, and serial numbers begin in the ranges HQ441-HQ507 and 3X446-3X510. So if you are using one of these computers, be careful.

Recall that last summer, Apple and the CPSC already recalled the batteries used in the PowerBook G4. It is significant that they were also produced by LG Chem.
