Philips and Novaled create high efficiency OLED

Philips Lighting, Philips Research and Novaled claim they have collaborated to create a white organic light-emitting diode (OLED) with record high efficiency. In the future, such devices are expected to form the basis of indoor lighting systems.

Unlike conventional LEDs, OLEDs contain thin layers of organic material that emits light when exposed to electrical energy. They are not point, but surface light sources, emitting a diffuse glow of low brightness. They can be used to produce shades of colors or uniform white light.

Currently, OLEDs are mainly used in small-sized displays installed in mobile phones, MP3 players or PDAs. But once larger, high-efficiency OLEDs are affordable, they can, in many cases, be an effective replacement for energy-efficient light bulbs.

Philips is a renowned authority on home appliances and Novaled is a German company dedicated to the development and commercialization of OLED technology. Commenting on the partners’ achievement, the head of Novaled noted that efficiency is one of the critical indicators for light sources, and the developed efficiency improvement technology will unlock the potential of low-power sources based on OLED.
