First desktop RFID reader with Windows CE operating system

Symbol Technologies, a provider of enterprise mobility solutions (trademarked by The Enterprise Mobility Company), develops products that allow you to receive, transmit and manage information in real time from the point of data collection to the point of decision. Symbol Products Combine Data Acquisition Technologies, Ruggedized Mobile Computers and Wireless Infrastructures. Today it introduced the first RFID tag reader that supports the Microsoft Windows CE platform.

Symbol, renowned as a manufacturer of barcode readers, has focused on RFID technology to further its growth, starting with the acquisition of Matrics a year ago. Indicators of success are recent agreements with the U.S. Department of Defense and Boeing.

New Symbol XR400 will be the first fixed RFID reader on the market with an operating system. Symbol is already launching a family of mobile computers that can handle RFID tags, but hopes that the arrival of fixed readers that can run applications will push customers to develop software that links directly to their ERP systems.

Implementing RFID technology can be challenging today. The worker scans the RFID tag and the information is fed into a specialized application running on a separate machine. Subsequently, the data is processed by a central system such as an Oracle database or SAP application, from which management receives reports. The Symbol XR400 eliminates the need for a separate machine, saving time and money.

RFID is a small but growing market. RFID equipment and services sales are expected to reach $ 7 billion in 2021, according to an April report by analyst firm IDTechEx. Doll., versus 1.5 billion. Doll. in 2021. Analysts predict peak demand for the period from 2021 to 2021, assuming that by 2021 prices for tags will decrease from $ 1. up to just 10 cents.

Microsoft is actively partnering with RFID companies to encourage them to support and develop products for Windows. Symbol says it chose Windows CE over Palm OS because most of its partners and customers are already familiar with Windows and can quickly develop applications for the platform. Mr. Hotard also noted that “Oracle and SAP already support Windows CE and that Symbol will be encouraging its partners to develop applications for the XR400 to help expand the market for this device.”.
