IDF: Intel in small specks

Intel briefed IDF participants on the current state of the Mote project – a platform for miniature wireless devices.

To start ? a little about the project itself. The name Mote can be translated as “speck”, and the main goal of the research work was to build a self-organizing intelligent network, the basis of which will be tiny computers with battery power and radio modules that allow them to exchange data. In fact, Mote is her main building block .

The platform features modularity of hardware and software, extremely low power consumption and low cost in case of mass production.

The developers envisioned wireless sensor networks to find their place in a wide variety of industries, from agriculture and earthquake surveillance to industrial and military applications. Potential markets also include transportation, security systems, home automation and even toys.

The research agenda focuses on three areas: lowering power consumption, increasing integration, and developing hardware reconfiguration capabilities.

The modules are based on the XScale processor. According to the developer, its use will bring the battery life up to 6-12 months. The module works under the control of the Tiny OS operating system, which takes into account the specifics of the operation of embedded systems equipped with a radio interface (in particular, Bluetooth support and work in networks of various topologies are implemented).

Integration of the processor core, analog and digital radio components, flash memory and static RAM, as well as some sensors within a single-chip or single-case system (SoC or SIP) should reduce the size and cost of the device.

The ability to reconfigure due to the interaction of modules with each other will lay in the platform a sufficient degree of flexibility necessary to increase operational efficiency while maintaining low power consumption.

And now – about what was shown on the forum. The first slide shows the features of the first stage of the project. The modules were built on 8-bit controllers, had a small amount of memory and, in general, were suitable only where large computing power or bandwidth of the communication channel was not required. The main emphasis in their development was placed on low power consumption.

The Intel factory was cited as examples where the new technology is actually used ..

… And the water system installed in Boston.

And here is a diagram showing the interaction of a sensor that monitors the condition of a pipe with a hub installed on the roof of a building via a wireless interface.

A more complete picture of the “speckled” networks is given by this snapshot:

Mote2 – improved version of the module. Built on XScale PXA 271 32-bit processor. Lasts longer, transfers farther, uses less energy.
