Nanotubes – in displays as a backlight
Many different applications have already been found for carbon nanotubes, including as an element base for future nanoelectronic circuits, however, Applied Nanotech believes they can offer one more: flat-screen TVs and new-generation displays.
Recall that carbon nanotubes were first discovered at the NEC laboratory, which owns the rights to commercial use of these technologies and which is going to release the first chip on nanotubes by 2021. Nanotubes were discovered in the late 1990s to manifest themselves as conductors or as semiconductors, depending on the orientation of the hexagons of carbon atoms relative to the direction of the nanotube axis (chirality).
Applied Nanotech proposes to use nanotubes as light sources in next generation TVs to replace backlight lamps in large diagonal LCD TVs (40-60 inches). And the company hopes to do this by 2021, that is, just four years after light-emitting nanotubes were first created.
Applied Nanotech, a subsidiary of Nano-Proprietary, has created a backlight using nanotube ink printing technologies. Unlike conventional lamps, the new design uses phosphorus-containing coatings and a cathode that is literally printed with ink based on metallic paint and nanotubes.
The cost price of backlight lamps created in this way is very low (unlike, say, cathodes, in which nanotubes would be grown), which is very important for today’s insanely expensive large displays. New technology backlight for 32-inch TVs claims to consume 50 to 60 watts. Applied Nanotech is expected to showcase details of its technology at NanoEurope 2021 in Switzerland next month.
It is also worth noting that in addition to Applied Nanotech, manufacturers such as, for example, Samsung are also interested in the possibilities of using nanotube technologies in displays and as light sources.
