If you happen to wander in a dark room, you remember how intuitively stretching your arms forward and relying on touch. If you move your hands in space, then the risk of crashing your forehead into the doorframe will noticeably decrease. Insects have brought this principle to perfection: they “feel” the space with long, vibrating whiskers and are able to navigate even in rather difficult conditions. Think of at least a grasshopper wading through the grass or a beetle looking for a way through branches and fallen leaves. Scientists from the Fraunhofer Institute in Magdeburg and the University of Bielefeld decided to reproduce this method of spatial orientation in a new type of sensor. The finished structure could be used in the development of mobile robots.

Researcher-engineered sensor delivers more environmental information than conventional contact touch sensors. At the same time, it is more reliable and cheaper than optical sensors built using cameras.

Two motors move the “antennae” along a closed oval trajectory. Acceleration sensors are placed on their freely oscillating ends. Unlike conventional contact sensors, which only respond to touching their tip, the new sensor uses the entire length of the “mustache”. Depending on the point with which it touches the object, the acceleration sensor makes it possible to record the change in the vibration frequency of the end. The frequency and signals from the motors to allow for the angle of deflection of the “whisker” during contact indicate the location of the obstacle. Through the use of feedback, the robot probes in more detail the area where the initial contact occurred and receives more data about the relief.

A prototype sensor was installed on an autonomously moving insect robot. But the principle for which, by the way, a patent application has already been filed, is easily applicable in other cases. The novelty can replace optical sensors and cameras in those conditions where they fail: in dusty or dirty environments.
