MRV extends the maximum range of 10 Gbps connections over multimode optics

MRV, a provider of metro IP and fiber optic solutions, in an official press release announced the release of new XFP modules, providing the industry’s highest communication range for 10Gb Ethernet and 10G Fiber Channel connections over multimode fiber. These interchangeable transceivers allow to increase the range of such connections up to 500 m instead of the standard 300 m, which is achieved by switching to using a wavelength of 1310 nm instead of 850 nm, as well as using special optical signal conditioning technologies in a multimode cable.

Thus, MRV expands the possibility of using GMX technology (Gigabit Multimode Extender), developed by LuminentOIC (a manufacturer of optical components, part of the MRV Communications holding), which allows to increase the range of one-gigabit connections over multimode cable from standard 550 m to distances of more than 2 km.
