Elpida begins production of the “most” 4 GB FB-DIMMs for servers

Elpida announced the start of the release of FB-DIMM (Fully Buffered Dual In-Line Memory Modules) for use in servers. According to the manufacturer, the new modules are characterized by the highest operating speed, the highest storage density and reduced thickness. Additional benefits of the new memory include improved synchronization with the memory controller and increased bus speed to support the next generation of high-performance server processors.

The new modules allow you to install in systems with eight slots up to 32 GB of memory operating at data transfer rates up to 21.2 GB / s. FB-DIMMs are based on 1 Gigabit DDR2 chips, manufactured using the unique Elpida stacked FBGA (sFBGA) technology. Thanks to this, it was possible to significantly reduce the thickness of the modules compared to the requirements of the JEDEC specification (6.7 mm versus 9.8 mm). As noted by the manufacturer, the reduced thickness helps to improve memory ventilation.

The main advantage of the new memory over traditional buffered modules (registered DIMMs) is full buffering. By buffering all signals – synchronization, address, commands and data in the direction of the DRAM device and back using a high-speed buffer installed on the module (Advanced Memory Buffer, AMB), designers were able to increase the speed of memory. In addition, the FB-DIMM uses a direct point-to-point connection between elements. This allows not only to increase the speed, but also to increase the number of modules connected to the bus, freeing developers from worries about possible signal degradation.

Technical details of Elpida 4GB FB-DIMMs (EBE41FE4AAHA-5C-E, 0EBE41FE4AAHA-6E-E):

  • Logical organization – 256M x 72-bit x 2 rows (rank)
  • Delays of the CAS module based on DDR2-533 – 4-4-4
  • Delays of the CAS module based on DDR2-667 – 5-5-5
  • Data transfer rate in one channel – 5.3 Gb / s (total for four channels – 21.2 Gb / s).

The first test samples of FB-DIMM were released in December last year. EBE41FE4AAHA-5C-E and EBE41FE4AAHA-6E-E are currently available for review with mass production scheduled for Q4. Also available in lower density modules (2 GB, 1 GB, 512 MB).
