NaPa: first results

So, it looks like the pan-European technology project NaPa, launched last year, has begun to show its first results: Suss MicroTec AG presented the first lithographic tool for (nano-) imprint lithography. The tool, named the NPS300 NanoPatterning Stepper, was created as a result of a one-year joint project of the Sixth Framework in conjunction with the Finnish research center VTT Microelectronics Center. At the same time, as mentioned above, Suss is taking part in the four-year project NaPa.

To create lithographic designs, the NPS300 uses a method of printing onto a thermoplastic material with further UV treatment. Suss positions the novelty as an inexpensive alternative to electron beam lithography for 20 nm standards.

The NPS300 is reported to be capable of embossing up to 20 nm in cold (UV-NIL) and hot modes. The writing head can be positioned with an accuracy of 250 nm and can reproduce drawings up to 100 nm in size with line widths from 6.5 nm. The pressing force is from 5 to 4000 N, the active area is from 40×40 mm in “cold” and 100×100 in “hot” modes.
