Samsung begins serial production of FB-DIMMs, all on schedule
Samsung Electronics announced the start of mass production of a new generation of memory for servers and workstations – fully buffered modules (FB-DIMM), made on DDR2 SDRAM chips. To increase the speed of data processing in FB DIM-modules, the stream density of the processed data of the register memory is significantly increased.
The AMB (advanced memory buffer) chip implemented on the modules allows the use of high- and low-speed interfaces simultaneously. Buffer bandwidth ranges from 3.2 to 4.8 Gbps. Samsung’s FB-DIMM maximum throughput is 4.8Gbps, twice the speed of the previous generation DDR2-400 Registered Memory. Until now, with an increase in the memory bus frequency, the frequency of calls to the memory slot decreased. In the FB-DIMM architecture, this drawback is eliminated by organizing direct connections, which allow several memory modules to be connected in series for a given channel. Thus, the bandwidth of the channel can theoretically be brought up to 8 Gb / s per channel, which in general increases the bandwidth to 32 Gb / s when using 1 Gb modules.
