Cell processor decodes 48 video streams simultaneously

Toshiba has demonstrated to the public that the Cell microprocessor, developed jointly with Sony Group and IBM Corp. capable of simultaneously decoding 48 SDTV streams in MPEG-2 format. At COOL Chips VIII in Yokohama late last week, the company showed a film that showed the decoding process.

During operation, 48 MPEG-2 recordings were read from the hard disk, decoded and displayed on a 1920 x 1080 display. The display screen was divided into 48 cells, each of which showed its own video, reduced to the size of a cell. The company expects such technology to be used to display moving thumbnails in a list of videos. Six of the eight processing elements (SPEs) contained in the Cell were used to decode 48 MPEG-2 streams, one was used to scale images to fit the cells on the screen. The free eighth element can be used for completely independent processing.

In preparing the demo, Toshiba used an operating environment specifically designed to improve the efficiency of Cell software development. One of the key features of this framework is that developers who create applications do not have to think about distributing processes across the SPE. In other words, the OS has an automatic task scheduling feature for SPE.
