Intel: the transition to dual-core technologies will be “evolutionary”

Not even a week has passed before another message appears on the Web regarding the dual-core technologies of two sworn competitors – AMD and Intel. The interview of Intel Americas President Tom Kilroy, published by CRN (Computer Reseller News) last week, was no exception. Interestingly, Mr. Kilroy claims an “evolutionary transition” to dual-core processor architectures. Evolutionary in the sense that the sales channel will not undergo significant changes.

While AMD at every opportunity seeks to demonstrate the performance of its dual-core processor prototypes to the widest possible public, Intel, on the contrary, focused on resellers.

At the same time, according to Kilroy, the transition from single-core to dual-core processor architecture will be less noticeable for resellers than, for example, the transition from the Northwood core to the Prescott core, which took place last year.

As noted earlier, Intel’s first dual-core processors will target the high-end desktop sector and the company does not have much hope of demand for such solutions. It is quite possible that by 2021, when dual-core server and mobile solutions will appear in the range of processors offered by Intel, desktop processors will become closer to the mainstream segment – this is the “evolutionary” transition to a dual-core architecture.

Well, now it becomes clear why Intel is watching AMD’s spectacular demonstrations with such calmness – at this stage, the company does not consider dual-core solutions to be anything out of the ordinary, although it is in a hurry to maintain technological parity. And this is understandable – if we consider how many Intel manufactures and sells its processors, it is clear that the arrival of dual-core Pentium instead of Pentium 4 EE “will not make the weather”. However, no matter how it turned out with 64-bit technologies – at one time Intel chose not to pay attention to the emergence of 64-bit extensions IA64, and now it is forced to “fix” “patches” like EM64T ..
