Cirrus Logic CS42L51: Stereo Codec for Portable Applications
Cirrus Logic has announced the release of the first member of a new line of products – low-power ICs for processing analog and mixed signals in battery-powered devices such as MP3 players, voice recorders, mini-disc recorders and playback devices, PDAs, smartphones, digital camcorders.
The new product, designated CS42L51, is a stereo codec powered by a single 1.8 V supply and delivering 46 mW of power into a 16-ohm load (headphones). The 24-bit, 96-kilohertz, stereo codec is reportedly based on a multi-bit delta-sigma architecture that allows infinite sampling rates from 4 to 100 kHz. Thanks to its built-in negative voltage source, the CS42L51 is equipped with outputs with a center ground. This eliminates the need for costly and space-consuming decoupling capacitors, which is important given the intended use of the new codec.
In addition to high quality A / D and D / A converters, the CS42L51 includes a 3: 1 stereo signal input multiplexer, programmable gain amplifier, stereo mic preamplifier, low noise bias source, automatic level control circuitry, and a digital signal processor that implements the functions bass boost, treble boost, limiter and tone generator. Interestingly, to reduce power consumption, the power of unused blocks can be turned off. Analog outputs of the novelty are configurable as line-level or headphone outputs. Full mute and digital output level control provided.
In other words, a high degree of integration, the ability to operate from a single low-voltage power supply and compatibility with digital control signals uniquely position the novelty for use in compact self-powered devices.
CS42L51 trial samples are currently available. Mass release expected by late summer. Chip price – $ 3.95. per piece in lots of 1000 pieces.
