IBM, Infineon and Macronix jointly develop new memory
IBM, Infineon and Macronix join forces to develop phase-change memory (PCM).
Research in this area has been conducted for several years. The principle of operation of PCM is a reversible change in the state of a substance from amorphous to crystalline. One of the states could represent logical units, and the second ? zeros. Thus, by manipulating the state of a substance, it is possible to organize a storage device suitable for use in computers, players and other devices for recording, storing, reproducing and processing information. It is important that PCM can store data in the absence of power, before recording new information, the previous content can not be erased. What’s more, future-proof memory may offer several other important benefits, including improved reliability and speed, which is why it claims to be a replacement for flash memory. Unfortunately, so far only in the long term. According to some experts, it takes several decades to commercialize an idea. The developers of the three companies that have announced cooperation in this important area are looking at things with great optimism. According to them, we are three to five years away from PCM entering the market.
The work will take place at two IBM research centers located in the USA. They will be attended by from 20 to 25 representatives of three companies participating in the project. The time frame for the stages of the project has not yet been named.
