Smart Passports Checked

As you know, the US government planned to supplement the passports of citizens of this country with a microchip that provides an identification procedure using a radio signal (RFID). The introduction of the new system was slated for the summer, but there was unexpected opposition from individual rights groups. In their opinion, the technology has not yet been tested and may turn into an additional source of danger for travelers.

This microchip makes passports look like ID cards used in offices to check building access rights using an electronic reader.

Authorities say the new technology would allow customs and border officials to speed up passenger handling at airports and at the border. The novelty is part of a global plan to counter theft and counterfeiting of passports.
In August of this year, diplomats were to receive the first new passports, and then ? and other citizens who applied for a passport.

The chip embedded in the passport contains a digital copy of all information printed in the passport, including the name and photo of the owner of the document, specially processed to improve automatic recognition. Thanks to this, if ordinary passport entries are tampered with, the computer can detect the deception.

However, individual rights groups and representatives of companies involved in the passenger transport industry question the effectiveness of the new tool.

The fact is that the chip has a miniature antenna, with which it transmits information to the reader. According to opponents of new passports, terrorists or fraudsters will be able to read information using portable reading devices and thus easily identify US citizens in public places.

For their part, representatives of the authorities and firms involved in the development of RFID technologies reassure the public that it is technically extremely difficult, if not impossible at all, since the signal emitted by the antenna can only be received at a distance of about 10 cm.
As a result, the National Institute of Standards and Technology of the United States was obtained to check how effective and safe the developed system is. According to experts, the testing procedure can take one and a half to two months.
