As you know, the US government planned to supplement the passports of citizens of this country with a microchip that provides an identification procedure using a radio signal (RFID). The introduction of the new system was slated for the summer, but there was unexpected opposition from individual rights groups. In their opinion, the technology has not yet been tested and may turn into an additional source of danger for travelers.
This microchip makes passports look like ID cards used in offices to check building access rights using an electronic reader.
Authorities say the new technology would allow customs and border officials to speed up passenger handling at airports and at the border. The novelty is part of a global plan to counter theft and counterfeiting of passports.

The chip embedded in the passport contains a digital copy of all information printed in the passport, including the name and photo of the owner of the document, specially processed to improve automatic recognition.
