Supercomputer manufacturer Cray ? one of the first users of the new Internet protocol
The long-awaited update to the main Internet communication protocol finally shows signs of life ? MCI officially announced the first commercial client for IPv6 services.
Seattle supercomputer giant ? Cray Inc, turned out to be the first American company to use the IPv6 service, although so far on the basis of an earlier version. In addition, it became known that several corporate and government customers are already using the service, which quietly launched in January this year.
IPv6 protocol ? an improved version of IPv4, which is the main Internet protocol today. Hope is pinned on the new version to simplify administration, improve security and improve the addressing scheme. Despite the advantages, IPv6 has not yet become widespread. In the United States, until recently, it was commercially available from only one ISP ? by NTT Verio.
MCI offers free IPv6 over existing protocol for dedicated users located in the US, Europe and Asia. Replacement of the main protocol with “real” IPv6 is planned for a later period of this year. Then consumers of T1 and T3 services will be able to use IPv4 or IPv6. Implementation delays are associated with a significant volume of changes that need to be made to the system infrastructure.
According to a statement from MCI management, the attention of companies from various industries to the new protocol increased when the plan to move to IPv6 emerged in the US Department of Defense. Cray is using IPv6 to develop and test the next generation of Cray X1 line software. This is important because the new models are primarily intended for customers in the defense industry who are interested in the equipment purchased to support the new protocol. It is interesting to note that MCI has been working on the implementation of IPv6 since 1998, but only today there is real demand for this service.
