HP modernizes disk arrays

Hewlett-Packard Announces Plans to Upgrade Entry-Level (MSA) and Mid-Range (EVA) Disk Arrays Over the Next Several Months. HP will continue to improve its disk array technology in parallel with the release of products designed to help its customers migrate to a new storage architecture (network, grid architecture), according to company officials.

Moving to the new architecture will transform storage devices from standalone products into intelligent nodes that can be quickly connected to the network, providing instant scalability and ease of management. In other words, the goal of the migration is to share storage devices, and to simplify the installation, relocation and management of nodes through a single, integrated architecture.

In the entry-level sector, the company is implementing active-active controller support for the MSA1500 array. Expected at the end of the year, this update will enable the MSA1500 to run the HP-UX operating system and benefit from PV Links failure protection. MSA1500 will also support iSCSI.

In the mid-market HP plans to upgrade the XP12000 enterprise-grade array by September. As a result of the modification, EVA3000 and EVA5000 arrays can be connected to it, forming a virtual storage. The new XP10000 array will undergo a similar modification early next year.

The XP series products licensed by HP from Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) offer multi-vendor array scalability. In particular, virtual storage can be formed from arrays manufactured by HDS, EMC and IBM.
