NASA uses nanotubes in space
As you know, space instrumentation is the most science-intensive branch of human activity. According to the researchers, the importance of using nanotubes can hardly be overestimated – in spacecraft, the mass of copper conductors reaches up to a quarter of the entire mass of the apparatus.
The choice in favor of carbon nanotubes as an alternative suggests itself – the mass density of graphite, the most common allotrope of carbon, is much less than the density of copper or gold, and the internal structure of nanotubes makes their density even lower. However, the internal structure also plays a negative role, which is why we will not see them in working prototypes for another two years. We are talking about chirality (roughly speaking, about the conditional arrangement of carbon atoms in the hexagons that make up a nanotube), depending on which nanotubes exhibit the properties of semiconductors or conductors.
In addition to the fact that the bright minds of different countries (including ours) are seriously thinking about how to separate nanotubes of different chirality, the efficiency of their production remains not very high, and the cost of one conditional gram of nanotubes ranges from $ 375 to $ 2,000.
So, who knows, maybe NASA spacecraft will be much lighter, but they will cost more than modern, “heavy” spacecraft.
