RAD Data Communications has officially announced the release of a new high-performance, self-learning Ethernet bridge, the TinyBridge-100, the first pocket-sized device on the market.

TinyBridge’s high performance makes it the solution of choice for transporting local traffic over synchronous wide area networks (WANs). “The TinyBridge 100’s diminutive size and low cost make the TinyBridge 100 an ideal addition to existing synchronous WAN equipment, allowing customers to continue to operate their existing data equipment after migrating to faster Fast Ethernet,” said Ramon Horkany, TinyBridge Product Family Manager at RAD.

With dimensions of only 69x53x18 mm and a weight of 30 g, the device easily connects to office equipment. Installation is plug-and-play and any required configuration changes are made using seven switches on the device panel.

TinyBridge 100 can be supplied with V interface.24, V.35, V.36, RS 530 or X.21 for WAN connectivity and can interconnect 10 / 100BaseT Ethernet LANs via dedicated synchronous links often used in office and home networks. Accordingly, it can be used to add bridging functionality to existing synchronous WAN devices such as routers, multiplexers, and modems. The TinyBridge 100 takes full advantage of the available WAN bandwidth, operating at a maximum throughput of 19,700 pps – enough to support real-time broadband applications. The maximum packet size is 1536 bytes, which allows transparent transmission of VLAN frames.

TinyBridge-100 also comes with a 4-wire interface and contains a built-in modem for physical lines, which allows to extend Fast Ethernet LANs over four-wire copper lines up to 700 m. A good device for connecting entrances and houses of local house networks at a distance, the built-in TinyBridge modem also eliminates the need to purchase additional signal amplifiers.

10 / 100BaseT interface operates in full duplex or half duplex modes. Packets are filtered and transmitted at up to 19,700 packets per second. LAN interface stores a MAC address table up to 2048 addresses and supports automatic replenishment and deletion of obsolete addresses. In addition to this, the TinyBridge-100 provides two QoS queues in accordance with the 802.1p, or IP ToS, which allows real-time applications to receive higher priority.
