ARM unveils the most powerful processor in the ARM11 family
ARM showcased the first trial ARM11 MPCore processor, which achieved an aggregate performance of 1440 DMIPS (equivalent to an ARM11 processor operating at 1.2 GHz) with a power consumption of approximately 600 mW.
The test chip, which includes four processors working with shared cache memory, was created using the versatile 130nm technology without optimizing the process for performance or power consumption. Developers managed to achieve high performance while maintaining compatibility with existing applications developed for uniprocessor systems. There is a full Linux SMP port for the new processor, which provides automatic load balancing between processors when performing application tasks and reduces overall system power consumption.
Notably, the ARM11 MPCore chip was released without errors on the first try. The novelty is the fruit of cooperation between specialists from ARM and NEC. It confirms the workability of the solutions inherent in the design of the next generation flexible multiprocessor core, based on the ideology of symmetric multiprocessing (SMP).
It is worth recalling that the license for the multi-core ARM11 MPCore processor was acquired by NVIDIA, apparently in the hope of expanding the functionality and increasing the performance of the next generation GPUs.
