Sun Wants to Contribute to AMD Opteron Processor Development
As it became known, Sun Microsystems will assist AMD in developments aimed at improving the flagship line of high-performance Opteron processors.
Talking to the press last week, David Yen – executive vice president of the scalable systems group at Sun. The cooperation between the two companies has long been known, but for the first time we are talking about joint work on the Opteron processor.
According to Ian, helping to improve the Opteron processor is a natural step in the development of the relationship between the two leading developers. As you know, Sun has many years of experience in designing high-performance processors, and two years ago the company joined the HyperTransport Consortium, a group promoting high-speed data exchange technology implemented in Opteron and other AMD processors.
Recall that last year, the company’s range of servers appeared on the basis of Opteron, and a few weeks ago Sun presented a workstation based on this processor. According to John Fowler, executive vice president of the Sun Networking Systems Group, the demand for products that use AMD processors is growing steadily, especially in the corporate environment.
The high cost and volume of research and development faced by advanced processor designers prompts them to collaborate with other major designers. Specifically, AMD is partnering with IBM to develop manufacturing processes and technology deployment. In addition, AMD has an agreement to use Chartered Semiconductor’s Singapore manufacturing facility as needed.
In turn, Sun develops Sparc processor in collaboration with Fujitsu. According to Yen, in 2021 and 2021, Sun’s high-performance server models will be built on a processor, the main contribution to which comes from Fujitsu.
An AMD spokesman did not specify to what extent Sun will be involved in the development of future versions of the Opteron, but confirmed that the companies are collaborating on technical and marketing issues.
