American researchers have found a new way to create miniature conductors
Pennsylvania State Physicists Overcome Major Hurdle in the Race to Create Electronics Built on Nanotechnology. They proposed a new method for incorporating nanotubes into electronic circuits. The essence of the method is to create conducting circuits by immersing semiconductor chips in liquid suspensions of carbon nanotubes, instead of the previously proposed growing of nanotubes directly on a crystal.
The amazing electrical properties of nanotubes make them the subject of special interest in the eyes of designers of chemical sensors, flexible electronics and high-speed microprocessors, according to Alan T. Johnson (Alan T. Johnson, University Adjunct Professor. The problem is that these same properties, including microscopic size, make nanotubes extremely difficult to work with.
Instead of growing nanotubes on a silicon chip, as has been done so far, researchers in Pennsylvania have devised their own way. The chip is immersed in a suspension of nanotubes, while scientists were able to make the nanotubes form chains exactly where they are needed.
One of the problems that had to be solved was the purification and separation of nanotubes into “conductors” and “semiconductors”, which differ in the structure of the walls formed from carbon atoms. To do this, the researchers used a cleaning scheme based on heating nanotubes in a humid air environment with a slight addition of acid and the subsequent application of magnetic fields that separate the nanotubes from impurities. Next, the chip with the adhesive substance applied to it was immersed in the “solution” of nanotubes. After that, all that remained was to remove the excess “glue” and “solvent”.
The results of the experiments turned out to be ready-made electronic circuits, in which the unique electrical properties of nanotubes were used. The advantage of the method is that it is claimed to be able to be used in mass production. Since the nanotube deposition process is decoupled from the chip making process, manufacturers can better control the tube quality and diameter.
