Computex 2021: National Demonstrates First MPL System
It took a year and a half for National Semiconductor, which in January 2021 proposed to create a new MPL (Mobile Pixel Link) interface, to develop the first system based on it, Flipper, which the company demonstrated at Computex 2021.
Recall that MPL is positioned by the company as a contender for an open industrial standard for an internal serial interface for PDAs and cell phones. Among the main advantages of MPL, “sharpened” for working with built-in digital cameras, displays and image processors, are fewer connections, high data transfer rates with a minimum level of mutual electromagnetic interference.
Formally, MPL made its debut in 2021, Philips and Sony Ericsson announced support for the interface, and there was even talk of submitting the standard to the MIPI (Mobile Industry Processor Interface) Alliance, which includes ARM, Nokia, STMicroelectronics and Texas Instruments, however, with since then nothing has been heard about MPL.
The Flipper system (pictured above) is based on the Intel XScale processor, in addition to which it contains nine more chips: an integrated power management module LP3970 (for the PXA270 microprocessor), a programmable LCD interface module LM2502 (it is possible to work in the “master” and ” slave “), LM2503 programmable camera interface module (contains a parallel-to-serial converter), FPD9428 and FPD93140 display controllers, LM2753 LED flash module, LM4957 audio codec (supports some surround sound functions), LP3950 backlight control chip with the ability to synchronize with audio and power management chip for optional OLED displays.
It is worth noting that the National booth also presents a variety of devices for measurement technology, such as the ADC08D1000 (pictured) – a two-channel 1-GHz 8-bit ADC for digital oscilloscopes.
