Dual view and veil view: the development of Sharp LCD technology

Sharp Announces Dual View and Veil View LCD Display Technologies Today. Continuing Sharp’s development in stereo vision and in protecting the information displayed on the display from prying eyes, these technologies allow you to see different images from different angles.

A simple example of how dual view works: instead of connecting two monitors to watch TV programs and work on a PC, the user looking at the screen on the right will see the picture from the TV tuner, and on the left – the windows of the OS in which ( to let it go, this effect is demonstrated with the help of a mirror).

Dual view technology is based on the “parallax barrier” technique already used in some Sharp notebooks, with the only difference that the new technology had to take into account the greater distance between the light receivers – instead of several tens of millimeters, the distance between human eyes can reach several meters. By the way, as far as can be understood from the auto-translation of the press release from the Japanese language, Sharp does not intend to stop there – the parallax barrier method allows showing three different images in the horizontal and two additional images in the vertical projection planes, allowing us to hope that in the foreseeable future Sharp will be able to show five different pictures on one screen – of course, seen from different angles.

However, there is one unpleasant moment – you will have to pay for the number of images with permission. When displaying two images, the resolution is halved, respectively, when displaying three or more images on one display, you cannot count on high image quality.

The second of the mentioned technologies, veil view – allows, using the parallax barrier method, to adjust the viewing angle at which the user sees an informative picture, and the angle from which curious neighbors will see something completely different.

In addition to laptops, this technology, Sharp believes, could be useful in ATMs or in organizations that require confidentiality of information.
