802.11n: a new version of the specification is being developed based on TGnSync and WWiSE
Today there are two variants of 802 standard offerings.11n, one – Task Group N (TGnSync), the second – WWiSE (World-Wide Spectrum Efficiency), but last week IEEE members could not make a final decision on which one to stop. The work on the adoption of the specifications is stopped until a new proposal is made that includes elements of both existing options.
At the Atlanta meeting, 180 votes (56%) were cast for Task Group N and 44% for WWiSE. As the director of business development at Airgo Networks noted, since none of the proposals received the necessary number of votes (75%) for adoption, representatives of both parties will hold discussions in the coming weeks, during which they will try to find out how the two versions of the specification can be combined. The company representative also said that before the appearance of the preliminary version of the specification in the IEEE, it is possible to hold one or two meetings devoted to the issue. Depending on the pace of the discussions, the second vote on the adoption of the specification will be held in May-July.
Considering, however, that both proposals already have a lot in common, it can be assumed that the two mentioned meetings will happen soon enough: both the TGnSync proposal and the WWiSE proposal provide for the creation of a LAN with a transfer rate of up to (and, possibly, more) 100 Mbit / c, both are based on the use of Airgo’s Multiple Input / Multiple Output (MIMO) antenna technology, although they differ in implementation.
According to an Airgo spokesperson, TGnSync has more optional items than Wise, which can make it more difficult to implement [hardware]. Be that as it may, but experts in the field believe that the adoption of 802.11n as standard shouldn’t wait until next year.
