Project manager claims Godson-2 does not infringe MIPS copyright

We recently reported that the 64-bit Godson-2 microprocessor, developed in China, according to the analytical company In-Stat, may have been created in violation of international law. At the end of last week, new details of the story became known.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), which designed the microprocessor, says its design does not violate any international intellectual property rights.

In the opinion of the project management, the assessment given by In-Stat, on the whole, was objective, but in subsequent attempts to interpret it by other media, some of the information turned out to be distorted.

In particular, the development team did indeed use the term “MIPS-like” for marketing purposes to describe the Godson-2 processor, although, as it turned out later, this was not the wisest decision.

The fact that a processor is 95% MIPS compliant does not automatically mean that it infringes any patents, according to the project manager. At the level of microarchitectural solutions, Godson-2 is completely different from MIPS chips.
