The first FVD players appeared
We have already talked about the fact that the Forward Versatile Discs (FVD) format has received official status. As a reminder, FVD was developed as a cost-effective alternative to blue laser optical disc formats. Very little time has passed, and now the first players supporting the new format have already been presented to the public. It happened the other day at a consumer electronics show in Taiwan.
The first generation FVD uses a red laser (wavelength 650 nm). The format provides a resolution of 1280×720 elements, corresponding to high definition television. Single-sided, single-layer disc has a capacity of 5.4 to 6 GB. The use of Microsoft WMV-9 compression technology allows to accommodate up to 135 minutes of high-definition recording in this volume. Provides the use of animated and static menus, and display in the “picture in picture” mode. In other words, the format surpasses the already familiar DVD in its capabilities. Copy protection is assigned to a mechanism built according to the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). The format was developed by ITRI and the Taiwan Advanced Optical Storage Research Alliance (AOSRA), an organization uniting 29 Taiwanese companies operating in the optical media industry.
The first turntables on the Taiwanese market will appear this month, priced at around $ 175. The package will include 10 discs with films in the new format. The 120mm disc is expected to be followed by a smaller version optimized for use in portable players.
