Nemoptic launches next generation LCD mass production program

The young European company Nemoptic has set an ambitious goal for itself – to become the world leader in the production of next generation LCDs. The basis for such aspirations is an innovative technology called BiNem. According to Nemoptic, BiNem can become a new standard for LCD production due to its advantages over other technologies: very low power consumption, high optical performance and economy.

In May of this year, Nemoptic announced the start of a program for mass production of BiNem modules. Together with OEMs, the company has set up a flexible production line and plans to start shipping commercial BiNem products by the end of 2021.

The first applications for BiNem technology will be ‘Zero’ Power Displays, in which images and text, once recorded, can be displayed indefinitely without wasting energy; “electronic paper” (Advanced Epaper Displays), which is said to provide excellent readability, wide viewing angles and bright white backgrounds; flexible displays (Plastic Flexible Displays) for smartcards; high-quality color transmissive displays (Color Transmissive Displays).

BiNem is an abbreviation for Bistable Nematic. “Bistable” in the name means that, thanks to the effect of internal memory, the display elements can remain in one of two states without consuming energy for as long as desired.
