Intel discontinues 865 and 915PL / GL chipsets
Intel plans to discontinue 865-series and 915PL / GL chipsets in the fourth quarter, according to the source, as a result of which the company will effectively withdraw from the entry-level chipset market. It is also reported that Intel announced this only to its main customers – leading motherboard vendors and OEMs, no public announcement is planned.
Thus, in the short term, the pressure on Taiwanese manufacturers SiS, VIA and Uli, as well as ATI, which also produces entry-level chipsets, will be eased.
Whether Intel’s competitors will be able to take advantage of the opportunity given to them largely depends on how well the production partners provide them, and they are not doing too well – as follows from the data for the past two months, the Taiwanese “chip forges” TSMC and UMC are working on full capacity, but do not cope with all the orders that have fallen on them.
For example, SiS claims that it received assurances from UMC to increase the production of its core logic chips, however, it is expected that the supply of 661 chipsets will remain below demand until the end of the year. As for VIA, the company will have to take additional steps to accelerate the release to market of its solutions that support Intel processors – now the majority of VIA chipsets are focused on the AMD platform.
