Microelectronics pioneer Jack Kilby dies at 81
Winner of the 2000 Nobel Prize for the development of an integrated circuit as such Jack Kilby died on Monday after a transient cancer at 81 years of age.
In 1958, using rented equipment during his first year at Texas Instruments, Mr. Kilby developed the world’s first integrated circuit. All components were placed on a single piece of semiconductor half the size of a paper clip. This was the beginning of the era of microcircuits.
In a statement announcing the death of his comrade, the President of TI said: “In my opinion, there are very few people whose work has changed the world and the way of life. Among them are Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, the Wright brothers and Jim Kilby. His development of an integrated circuit did not change our industry, but our world. “.
Mr. Kilby holds over 60 US patents, including a Germanium microcircuit patent obtained in 1959. A little later, Robert Noyce of Fairchild Semiconductor received a patent for a more complex silicon microcircuit made using a similar technology. He later co-founded Intel.
Mr. Kilby was born in Great Bend, Kansas, trained as an electrical engineer at the University of Illinois at Wisconsin, and began his career in 1947 at Globe Union in Milwaukee, developing silk-screen printed circuit boards for consumer electronics on a ceramic substrate.
Later he pioneered the military, industrial and commercial applications of microcircuits, leading in particular the first military team to implement them and the first team to create a computer on microcircuits. In addition, he participated in the development of a micro calculator and thermal printer for terminals.
In 1970, he left TI to work on his own in converting solar energy into electricity, but until recently remained a consultant to the company.
During his life, Jim Kilby received 2 of the most prestigious US awards: in 1970 the National Science Medal and in 1982 he was inducted into the lists of the American National Explorers Hall of Fame, along with Ford, Edison and the Wright brothers.
His life continues with two daughters and five granddaughters.
