Microsoft will try to squeeze all the juice out of the game console market
As you know, from the point of view of hardware manufacturers, the video game business is built on the “camera and film” model. Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony agree to sell their cameras … sorry, game consoles are at a loss as long as they receive royalties from the software makers for every copy of the game (film) sold. However, this seemed to Microsoft too little. It was decided to seek additional reserve.
As reported by CNet News.com, Microsoft hopes it can make Xbox 360 peripheral makers fork out when the new console hits the market. So far, independent manufacturers of Xbox game controllers and peripherals have not had to pay Microsoft royalties unless they wanted to display the Xbox logo on their products. Now everything will change: the next-generation console will be equipped with special technical means of protection, information about which will be available only to those peripheral manufacturers who agree to pay license fees.
Perhaps, when it comes to game developers, this approach is justified. But peripheral manufacturers, especially small ones, often work with a very small margin of profit. In other words, this move on the part of Microsoft could easily knock them out of the market. The question is, is it good for consumers?? One thing is clear – it is hardly worth counting on the fact that peripherals for the new console will be affordable, because it will include Microsoft’s share.
