New technology of electron microscopy: ion beams instead of electron beams

Alis claims to have made a breakthrough in electron microscopy technology that has changed little since the 1960s. The company’s developers propose to use a beam of helium ions, rather than electrons, which, according to their estimates, should significantly improve the resolution of scanning electron microscopes.

The advantages of using ion beams are, firstly, in the possibility of focusing into a smaller spot, which is due to the lower rate of interaction of ions with each other, although the interaction of highly charged ions with each other is much greater than that of electrons. In addition, it is argued that when using ion beams, the requirements for the degree of preparation of the scanned sample are much weaker than when using electron beams.

The development of ion beam microscopes has been going on for ten years, and now Alis announces its readiness to begin providing commercial products. Such microscopes are planned to be used, in particular, in the analysis of the quality of semiconductor microcircuits.
