World record for the speed of current in a microcircuit

Scientists continue to unleash the potential of nanotechnology. Researchers at the University of California, Irvine have demonstrated for the first time in practice that carbon nanotubes can conduct electrical signals in a microcircuit faster than traditionally used copper or aluminum conductors. The breakthrough could lead to an increase in the speed of computers, improvement of wireless networks and mobile communication systems.

Projects in this direction are carried out by many companies and research organizations. We recently reported on Fujitsu’s plans to use carbon nanotubes as on-chip interconnects.

As you know, most of the layers in a modern semiconductor microcircuit are intended for connections between elements. This means that the conductive properties of the material from which the joints are made are very important. More recently, the industry has made the transition from aluminum to copper compounds, as copper conducts electrical signals faster than aluminum. The results of the study in question make it obvious that the transition from copper to nanotubes can even more noticeably increase the speed of operation of microcircuits: in the course of the experiment, a signal propagation speed corresponding to the frequency of oscillations of the electromagnetic field of 10 GHz was obtained. Of course, for nanotubes to become an economically viable and technically feasible replacement for today’s technology, there is still a lot of work to be done.
