Said center is located in Fremont, California. It will complement Toshiba’s own Japan-based research resources. The enterprise staff of 50 development engineers will become part of Toshiba America Information Systems Inc. According to Scott Maccabe, Vice President of Toshiba’s Storage Development Division, the acquisition will significantly strengthen the corporation’s engineering strength and give new impetus to the development of hard drives in miniature form factors.
As a reminder, Toshiba is one of the leaders in this industry. In particular, the company holds a kind of record ? it produces the smallest hard drive in the world at the moment, in a form factor of 0.85 inches (about two centimeters). Toshiba is also the leader in 1.8-inch hard drives, shipping around 14 million. units of these products since the start of their production in 2000.
