Rochester supercomputer simulates black holes
One of the fastest supercomputers in the world and the first designed specifically for the study of clusters and galaxies, installed at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT).
The new computer, built under the direction of David Merritt, professor of physics, uses a specially optimized architecture that allows it to run faster than standard supercomputers of comparable size.
Known as the gravitySimulator, the computer simulates the evolution of the galaxy, the movement of stars, and gravitational interaction. These problems are extremely computationally demanding, so traditional supercomputers are able to perform such calculations only with thousands of stars at the same time.
The new computer achieves higher performance through special accelerator cards called GRAPE or Gravity Pipeline (bottom image). As a result, gravitySimulator, which is one of only two machines of its kind in the world, reaches a maximum performance of 4 Teraflops (trillion calculations per second). Such a high figure provided gravitySimulator with a place in the first hundred of the fastest computers in the world. The computer costs over $ 500,000. RIT, the National Science Foundation and NASA contributed to the funding of its creation.
Since the start of work this spring, gravitySimulator has managed to help study the problem of a double black hole – a phenomenon when two galaxies collide and their central, supermassive black holes form a bound pair. Merritt and his team will also use the gravitySimulator to study the dynamics of the Milky Way’s central galaxy, to which our planet is known to belong.
