Lufthansa and Siemens Business Services test biometric passenger check-in system

Approximately 400 Lufthansa employees at Frankfurt Airport have begun testing a fingerprint-based check-in and boarding system. The German airline took this step in an effort to speed up passenger service and improve transport safety. The technical side of the project was implemented in cooperation with Siemens.

In the second phase of the Trusted Traveler project, which will begin in 2021, the system will be implemented in a real service line and will cover the second airport, initially limited to passengers who frequently fly. The organizers of the project emphasize that the application of the system occurs on a voluntary basis.

How does the system work?? Lufthansa passengers undergo a fingerprint scan upon drop-off. The prints are saved in the database. Together with the registration information, an encrypted fingerprint (in the form of a bar code) is printed on the boarding pass. During boarding, the code on the pass is verified against the actual fingerprint. If the data match, the passenger is allowed on board. Currently, biometric passenger control procedures are carried out on a voluntary basis, but may become mandatory in the future, subject to the adoption of the relevant EU directive.
