Intel Explained: New Platforms Have DTCP-IP Support, but DRM Does Not

Following Intel’s announcement of digital home and office platforms, rumors circulated online of their undeclared support for DRM copyright protection technologies that we reported. The company has issued an official denial of these rumors, here is the information.

Many of the company’s products today support different technologies for protecting copyright and content. Today these are Macrovision and DTCP-IP technologies, and by the end of the year Intel will provide an updated graphics driver with support for COPP, HDCP, CGMS-A and other content protection methods. DTCP-IP, an open technology supported by many companies, is designed to protect the transport of compressed media content within a home network. The company continues to work on data protection, but neither the Pentium D nor the 945 series chipsets have any unannounced technologies built in, including DRM support.

DTCP-IP (Digital Transmission Content Protection) is a mechanism for protecting information transmitted over a home network between computers and household appliances, it is a cryptographic protocol whose task is to prevent the interception and illegal use of media data. At the same time, DRM technology is designed to protect information transmitted over the Internet. DTCP-IP is much narrower in scope and does not fully implement the mechanisms necessary for DRM to work.

DTCP-IP support at the hardware level means, first of all, the availability of sufficient computing power to encode / decode an encrypted and compressed media stream, including multiple streams simultaneously. In this regard, new platforms meet the protocol requirements. Video core driver support also provides data decryption. Intel has prepared an addendum to the Intel Networked Media Product Requirements (NMPR) to support DTCP-IP at the data transport and image renderer layer.

The DTCP-IP specifications were jointly developed by Intel, Hitachi, Matsushita, Sony and Toshiba, a group called 5C. Intel and other members of the group have been promoting the protocol since December 2021, when the final specifications were adopted as part of the digital home concept. Some consumer electronics manufacturers are already building DTCP-IP support into the FireWire interface they equip their products with.
