Intel leaves the low-end chipset market: long live Intel!?
As we have noted more than once, the last two months on the market has been a shortage of entry-level Intel 845 and 865 series chipsets. Several reports have been published on the Web that Intel is not going to increase the production of chipsets of these series, moreover, it plans to completely discontinue their production and concentrate on high-end chipsets and platforms for mobile PCs.
And earlier rumors circulated that the reduction threatens not only the 845 series, but also 865, 910GL and 915PL / GL chipsets. However, the source says Intel has assured motherboard manufacturers that the 865-series chipset will continue to ship as long as market demand exceeds supply. Of course, this does not mean that the release of chipsets cannot stop, say, in the fourth quarter.
According to IDC (International Data Corporation), in the second quarter, shipments of personal computers (PCs) amounted to 39.7 million. units, which is 15.5% more than in the second quarter of last year. Of these, 29.4% were notebooks, with notebook shipments up 33% year-on-year. At the same time, the growth of shipments of desktop PCs was only 13%.
In this regard, Intel’s decision to withdraw from the entry-level desktop chipset market is a logical decision – the day is not far off when “the world of PCs will be ruled by laptops.”. Let’s take a quick glance at the lineup of “laptop” chipsets. Alviso core logic chipset (new generation Centrino) costs about $ 30, 910GML costs $ 31, 915PM – $ 36, 915GM and 915GMS – $ 39 each. Chipsets expected to be discontinued are less than $ 30. Therefore, if Intel’s manufacturing facilities produce more expensive chipsets instead of cheaper ones, the company’s profit margins will increase significantly.
It should also be noted that, in spite of Intel’s “platforming”, chipset vendors are working together with AMD on the CSIP (Commercial Stable Image Platform) program, which will be presented to the public in September. If Intel leaves the low-end market, it will open a niche for Taiwanese (and not only) manufacturers, which the company has kept in a black body until now, and these manufacturers (VIA, SiS, ULi, ATI and NVIDIA) will be able to sell more its solutions for Intel processors, which means it will allow the processor manufacturer to maintain an advantage in market share and in the entry-level solutions sector – and all this by the wrong hands.
However, these alien hands should not be offended by Intel at all – the bone that she throws at them may become flesh in the near future, and again, due to the fact that Intel will leave the low-end market. If earlier, due to an excess of supply, prices were low, now, thanks to the shortage created in this way, prices will begin to grow, both in the segment of initial solutions and in the segment of mass products (mainstream).
At the moment, SiS is in the most favorable situation: the company correctly assessed the situation and at an accelerated pace established the release of entry-level chipsets for Pentium processors with its manufacturing partners. In addition, as we recently reported, the company has notified customers of an upcoming price hike for SiS661 chipsets.
And there, you see, VIA and ATI will catch up – both are going to increase deliveries by the end of this year. Incidentally, ATI, with its Radeon Xpress 200, is the only manufacturer (besides Intel, of course) to offer an integrated graphics chipset with PCI Express support. Uli remains a “dark horse” so far, but it, like SiS, since its partner is UMC (United Microelectronics Corporation), can quickly launch the production of chipsets in large quantities than those vendors that cooperate with TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company ).
