IDC on the Pocket PC Market: The Recession Continues

The global handheld computer market is in decline for the sixth consecutive quarter. This is the conclusion reached by analysts of the well-known company IDC, having studied the statistical data for the second quarter of this year. According to this data, shipments of portable devices in the second quarter decreased by 20.8% compared to the same period a year ago and in quantitative terms amounted to 1.7 million units.

At the same time, despite the prolonged decline in global supplies, some manufacturers continue to be faithful to the chosen strategy and increase their presence in the pickpocket market. In particular, Acer and Yakumo were able to enter the top five in terms of shipments of handheld computers, including devices equipped with global positioning aids (GPS) in their portfolio.

Overall, according to IDC, the definition of a handheld device is becoming blurred as mainstream computers are under competitive pressure from mobile phones that are acquiring multimedia features.

The comments regarding industry leaders in the IDC press release are as follows:

In the first place is Palm, which recently returned to its roots. IDC analysts note the positive role of the new LifeDrive device, thanks to which it was able to influence the process of narrowing the market share of Palm and increase the total volume of shipments by 3.1%. In their opinion, this is just the beginning. It will be possible to fully assess the effect of the release of a promising novelty after waiting for information for the next quarter.

HP is plagued by user migration from traditional PDAs to devices that combine PDA and phone functionality. As a result, HP’s pickpocket shipments fell 39.3% year-over-year compared to the second quarter of last year.

For the second quarter in a row, Acer remains in the top five. Acer handheld device shipments up 608.2% year-on-year. This is primarily due to the success of the n35 with an integrated GPS receiver.

The fourth member of the five ? Dell. Dell looks strong despite QoQ shipments ? supply growth amounted to 17.1% compared to the data for the second quarter of last year.

Consumer electronics maker Yakumo replaces Medion. Over the year, shipments of handheld devices from this company grew by 346.2% (52.6% ? for the last quarter). According to ICD, the strong position of Yakumo ? budget PDA with integrated GPS receivers.
