The creators of Palm and Handspring tackle the human brain

Palm and Handspring founders set up a new venture to uncover the secrets of how the brain works and apply this knowledge to the computer industry.

Numenta, whose name comes from the Latin word mentis (mind), is led by Jeff Hawkins and Donna Dubinsky. At the same time Hawkins will retain a leading position at palmOne. Dabinski, known as a founding member and CEO of Handspring, and currently serving as CEO of Palm Computing, takes over the same position at Numenta.

The new company will focus on the development of a new type of memory systems that work in a similar way to the cells of the cerebral cortex responsible for conscious thinking, spatial thinking and sensory perception.

The first product of the company is called Hierarchical Temporal Memory (HTM), which can be translated as “temporary hierarchical memory”, and is based on the theoretical research of Hawkins. According to Hawkins, the word “hierarchical” in the name reflects the way memory modules are combined, and “temporary” – the principle of operation, when each module serves to temporarily store information. Numenta’s goal is to translate theory into practice. According to the expectations of the developers, a new type of memory will help solve complex problems of artificial intelligence, which are not yet amenable to traditional technologies. Examples include computer vision and natural speech comprehension.

Highly assessing the prospects of the project, the founders of the company emphasize its long-term nature, and do not expect a quick result. It will take at least several years to get the first commercial products.

Currently, the design of software tools is underway that will allow adapting the HTM architecture to the requirements of specific tasks. A community of developers is expected to develop around HTM technology.
