Sony and Toshiba could not agree

Teams led by Toshiba and Sony, which offered competing next-generation optical media technologies, failed to reach a compromise that would allow the industry to adopt a single standard.

Recall that in recent years, each of these groups has been trying to occupy a dominant position in the market, the volume of which promises billions in profits. On the side of Toshiba, which offered HD DVD, there are such companies as NEC, Sanyo, Microsoft. Sony, Matsushita, Samsung and their successors continue to push Blu-ray technology.

A compromise solution would be a significant incentive for the rapid adoption of the new medium by consumers and would accelerate the development of the industry, so the groups have repeatedly tried to agree on the unification of formats.

Unfortunately, the recent negotiations have again ended in nothing, and the time for unification has run out. Developments are about to cross the line when products are launched that, even if a compromise is found, will remain incompatible.

The senior vice president of Toshiba therefore noted that the end of August ? deadline for merging formats as software development for HD DVD players begins at this point. Deliveries of finished products will start early next year.

In turn, a Sony spokesman indicated that it became more difficult to combine formats after the unsuccessful end of negotiations on this issue in May.

Both companies agreed, however, that a unified format is still possible. Moreover, it was recognized that a single format would be the best way to develop.

The following scenario becomes likely: initially Toshiba and Sony will release incompatible products, and at the next stage there will be devices in which the incompatibility will be eliminated.
