LifeDrive: palmOne starts a new life?
PalmOne’s new handheld device is equipped with a hard disk and wireless interfaces.
Going beyond the usual pocket computers and smart mobile phones, palmOne, Inc. announced LifeDrive – the leading mobile device for business and entertainment. The novelty is positioned as the founder of a new category of devices – mobile managers. Designed for consumers interested in constant access to a large amount of personal information, LifeDrive offers a huge storage capacity for pocket devices – 4 GB. This indicator was achieved thanks to the use of a hard disk. By the way, the disk manufacturer is Hitachi. We have written more than once about her success in the design and manufacture of miniature hard drives. In addition to a large amount of memory, LifeDrive wins hearts with a high-resolution color screen (320×480 pixels) and built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules.
With LifeDrive, many people will be able to take virtually all their important files and folders with them from their desktop computer. Automatic synchronization provides secure wireless data updates when the user is within range of a Wi-Fi hotspot or when connected using a Bluetooth-enabled phone.
Surely the highlight of the new mobile companion is the hard drive. For a pocket computer, 4 GB is a luxury that is practically inaccessible today, despite the release of flash memory of a comparable volume. Supporting Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat Reader formats, the new product significantly simplifies the manipulation of a large number of documents, and the presence of a well-thought-out file management system increases the efficiency of work outside the office. The system combines several modules. Folder Sync module is used to automatically update files during synchronization. File Transfer lets you drag and drop files from your PC to LifeDrive for later use or transportation. Drive Mode provides USB storage mode. Finally, thanks to the Files View module, the folder structure when copied from a desktop computer remains unchanged, making it easier to find information.
Implemented 128-bit data encryption and password protection of access to the device. The Private Records function protects the specified files, and the optional Intrusion Protection function erases all data and returns the device to its original state after several unsuccessful attempts to crack the password, the number of which is specified by the user.
The performance of the device is sufficient for playing sound and video recordings, viewing photos, since it is based on the Intel XScale processor operating at a clock frequency of 416 MHz. Screen orientation can be changed “on the fly” with one click of a button. There is no need to restart the system or applications. The model is equipped with a microphone, which allows you to use it as a voice recorder. The expansion slot is traditionally designed for palmOne models to use SD cards and MultiMediaCards, SDIO peripherals. Operating system – Plam OS Garnet 5.four.
Announced device price: $ 499. Shipments in North America have already begun, but the new product will be mass-produced in early June.
